Mayer Brown News: Lawyers Comeback
Going back to work for a former employer can be a tough call for any professional. Reasons why people leave their jobs can be diverse. Others leave due to conflicts of interest, while some ventured to greener pastures. Whatever the case, it holds true that most people rarely ever think of going back to their former employers.
But this may not be the case today. In some instances, there’s no place like home.
Take lawyer Tim Ryan who worked, quit, and came back to work again for Mayer Brown a total of 4 times. Asked about the said incident, Ryan jokingly mused that Mayer Brown wanted him to sign his fourth contract with his own blood.
But the point here is that employees returning to work again for their former employers are not so uncommon anymore. For lawyers, they have their own reasons for their lateral shifting from one firm to another. And most are not chasing the big bucks. In a survey regarding the moving of lawyers from one firm to the other, most of them answered that they want to feel important, to be a significant part of the organization.
While most people would probably raise their eyebrows upon hearing that money is not an elemental issue, they would most likely be more surprised to hear why lawyers go back to their former firms: “They miss their friends,” says an attorney recruiter. Lateral shifting of lawyers may have increased, but so has going back to former firms or what the called the “coming home” phenomenon. In a world that is becoming increasingly transient, it seems that more people are looking for a little community served with their success.
