The Flaw of Squeezing

When I was learning to player online poker we were taught to read the board carefully. If we thought that another player was trying for a flush or a straight, we were told that the best move was to raise. The idea behind this strategy was that the player would be so intent on winning that he would pony up the cash. Squeezing the other players in this manner worked for a while, but soon I realized the fatal flaw of squeezing.

Don’t get me wrong, squeezing will work in most situations. But it will never, I repeat never, work if you are holding a rubbish hand to begin with. If my online poker opponent ponies up the cash to get to the showdown, this is only good if I think that I can actually win with my cards. Otherwise I am just going to look like a fool when we lay down our cards and he wins even without the flush.

I would suggest that you only squeeze when you can afford to put more money on the table. Think of squeezing in the context of a normal bet. You wouldn’t raise when you had nothing to your name, so why would you squeeze? There is no reason to do something in poker online just because the strategy has a fancy name.
