Google Apologizes, But User Say its Not Enough

Google is a major name and a successful one, to be contended with in the Internet, and so it came as a complete surprise that it took such a disastrous decision related with the launch of Buzz, its social networking application.

Buzz was launched with great hope as a medium for sharing status updates, social media streams and multimedia content using Google’s email, Gmail. The benefits of Google Buzz was given to all the 176 million users of Gmail without exception. This may have been Google’s way of claiming its share of the success related with social networking but in retrospect, unfortunately, it was not a well-planned decision at all. The benefit of allowing users to follow all the people that were in their Gmail contacts was seen as a display of disrespect of people’s privacy and disliked to such an extent, that the company had to reduce some of the functionality, besides apologizing.

Buzz continues to invite trouble and recently, a noted US privacy group has stated that it should be checked to see if Buzz follows consumer protection laws. Moreover, the Electronic Privacy Information Centre (Epic) has asked the Federal Trade Commission to see to it that the Gmail users are warned in advance if any changes are to be made related with their privacy policy; that any such proposed changes should be permitted by the users before they are executed and also to see that Google refrains from the active use of the Gmail address books of the users for the purpose of creating social networking lists.

Google should have really learned from Facebook’s experience, that users have no patience when their privacy is invaded. Facebook, a noted name in the social networking scene, realized this when without forewarning, they changed their privacy settings which was openly disliked by its users, who publicly protested against this unilateral move.
